Joe Akram

Role: Chair for the Community Rep. sub-
I also attend meetings to do with  Operation Emerald - Custody Directorate, Pride London, Greater London Authority (GLA), Critical Incident sub-group. 

I am currently employed at Victim Support as a Homophobic and Transphobic Crime Officer. In my role I have been involved in many different cases, supporting victims of crime.

Recently I was involved with the serious case at Hampstead Heath ‘Goldtooth’. In this case I supported 19 victims through the criminal justice system and I was recently awarded a Commendation awarded by the Met. Police.

I am also an Independent Advisor on the London Criminal Justice Board on LGBT issues.

Interests: Being a gay man I enjoy travelling and have been to many different parts of the world. Also the usual, socialising, clubbing and dining-out.

I have always being interest in International development and have being involved in different projects aboard. Currently learning Spanish and I have an aim to complete a PhD in criminology.

Best AG experiences: Learning from other members that have been involved in the group and in their working fields for many years. Away days where different skills have being shared.

Best thing the AG has achieved: Being able to work closely with the police and challenge them. Making sure that LGBT issues are on the top of the police agenda at all times.

Setting up of Local forums. LGBT Lo’s.

What gained from time on the AG: Inside knowledge to how the police service functions.

The ability to make sure that all the LGBT clients that I come across in my daily working life as well as my personal friends, know what to do and expect of the Met. Police.

Anna Byrne

Role: A member of the Trans sub group and Critical Incidents sub group. A member of the Bromley Independent Advisory Group.

Interests: Doing work with Age Concern. Listening to music, especially 1960s

Best AG experiences: Sex Workers’ Conference.

Best thing AG has achieved: Helping set up Broken Rainbow (same sex domestic violence help and advice).

What gained from time on the AG: A better knowledge of all diversity, but still need more knowledge.

Chris Dayman Smith

Role: I am general manager of Reflex Nightclub in the London Borough of Kingston. I have worked in the commercial sector of the LGBT community for 15 years. I maintain both the AG’s Meetings Schedule and Members Contact List. I am also Chair of Kingston Borough LGBT Forum, a member of Kingston Borough I.A.G., Kingston Borough P.C.C.G., Kingston Borough Recommendation 61 (Stop & Search) Monitoring Group and Kingston Borough Third Party Reporting Scheme Steering Group.

Interests: Cooking, music, wine, Bette Davis, Elizabeth I and travel.

Best AG experiences: The LGBT AG actually doing what it says on the packet! "Better policing for the LGBT Community". The AG has ensured that senior ranks of the MPS actually listen to our community and act on our advice.

Best thing AG has achieved: The AG consistently challenges the MPS and ensures they work together with the LGBT community.

What gained from time on the AG: I have been involved as an independent advisor to the MPS at Borough level for many years, however since being a member of the LGBT AG, I have gained a much wider knowledge and experience of the issues at central level, which has assisted me at Borough level.

Jackie Fernandez

Role: Vice Co-Chair, member of Performance Needs Analysis and Diversity Group.

Interests: Arsenal, Batman, Spiderman and X-Men, cooking and Jack Daniels.

Best AG experiences: There have been so many!

Best thing AG has achieved: Keeping LGBT issues on the police agenda.

What gained from time on the AG: I’ve learnt about policing and met some amazing people who are so focussed and passionate about the AG.

Samantha Goldberg

Role: Member of the Advisory Group  and attend Community Rep and Critical Incidents sub-groups.

Interests: FORUM!! Enjoying London’s nightlife, trainers.

Best AG experiences: Launching Wandsworth’s LGBT Community Network. Representing the AG at London Pride.

Best thing AG has achieved: LGBT Liaison Officers.

What gained from time on the AG: Meeting lots of interesting and interested LGBT community members. An understanding of the infrastructure and day to day work of the MPS.

Phil Greasley

Role: I have been the Casework Manager for Galop for nearly two years. The post gives me first hand experience of the type of problems LGBT people are experiencing as a result of homophobic and transphobic crime, domestic violence and issues people have with the police. I have worked in the LGBT sector for over twenty years dealing with a variety of LGBT issues. My academic background is in social research.

I am a member of the AG and a member of the Critical Incidents sub-group. My work at Galop is integral to my presence on the AG, when relevant, I can bring issues of concern for clients to the group.

Interests: Eating and drinking, walking, music, reading, going on holiday.

Best AG experiences: Meeting people, useful presentations, constructive discussion with the police.

Best thing AG has achieved: To have established a thriving group which is consulted and listened to by senior police.

What gained from time on the AG: Useful knowledge and information from the police and others on a range of LGBT police related issues.

Bob Hodgson

Role: I am an ex teacher and (out gay) deputy head and worked mainly in the lively and diverse institutions that are South London Comprehensive schools. I have worked on LGBT issues in housing, education, health and more recently policing in Lewisham for several years. Currently I am one of the two Co Chairs on the LGBT AG.

Interests: Travel, sun, sea, sand, mountains, cinema, West End, eating out and in!

Best AG experience: Lively debate with a very diverse and knowledgeable group of people – and also working with the police.

Best thing AG has achieved: Watching how as small a group as the LGBT can have a real influence on the gigantic organisation that is the MPS: Involvement  in murder investigations, LGBT Training  for al Family Liaison Officers, getting LGBT Liaison officers in place for example.

Subodh Rathod

Role: On the CR group for the AG and also on the Race Relations Amendment Act Group as a representative of the AG. Also help to facilitate firearms training as was the PNA (Performance Needs Analysis) group.

Interests: The Arts – dance, in particular South Asian Dance and cinema.

Best AG experiences: How productive we are.

What gained from time on the AG: A greater understanding of the policing needs for LGBT communities and what the “other side” thinks (up to a point).

Sue Sanders 

Role: A member of the LGBT -AG 

Co Chair of Schools OUT which has existed since 1974 to tackle the institutional heterosexism and homophobia in education www.schools-out.org.uk we initiated LGBT History Month www.lgbthistorymonth.org.uk. Vice Chair of Southwark Anti Homophobic Forum, Member of the NUT working party on LGBT issues, Independent Advisor to the London and Criminal Justice Board.

Interests: Theatre, visual art, and activism challenging oppression

Best AG experience: Learning from other AG members

Best thing the AG has achieved: Seeing the LGBT LO officers arrive and be successful in getting the reporting figures go up. Recognising that we have influenced the Family Liaison officers to be more aware of LGBT issues. The success of the critical incident panels in enabling the police to be more switched on in investigations. Hearing the Vice squad changed their attitudes after our conference. Knowing that so many school liaison officers now deal with homophobia.

What gained from time on the AG: More knowledge of how the criminal justice service works and does not work, grey hair and amazing colleagues and making a difference!

Michael Verrier

Role: I have been an activist within the LGBT Community for 22 years. I have been involved in the Broken Rainbow LGBT domestic violence service from the start and was a Trustee and Co-chair of the organisation. I have shared responsibility for raising a daughter with my partner and am now a Grandfather.

I am Chair of the Critical Incidents sub-group. I provide LGBT input into the Family Liaison Officers Training. I provide a dual role of representing the LGBT AG and Broken Rainbow around LGBT Domestic Violence issues

Interests: Science Fiction and Fantasy – Both reading and viewing. I am Chair of a Housing Trust Board and have a particular interest in social housing. Philatelist (stamp collector), video gaming, politics and diversity.

Best AG experiences: Working with Transgender members of the Community and the LGBT AG. The support from the LGBT AG for Broken Rainbow in its early days and ongoing and focus around LGBT domestic violence and policing issues. LGBT voices finally being heard and taken seriously around policing issues

Best thing the AG has achieved: Better police working practices and attitudes around the investigation of Homophobic, biphobic and Transphobic murders and hate crimes.

What gained from time on the AG: Knowledge, experience and an appreciation for fine detail. Most of all, an appreciation of working with a diverse group of people with many different views and experiences with the common goal of achieving a better deal for our community in terms of policing.
