LGBT Liaison Officer Roles
You may have heard about LGBT Liaison Officers. Below is a description of what they are and how they can help you. It is one of the LGBT Advisory Group's objectives to have an LGBT Liaison Officer in every London borough.
1. Liaise Internally and Externally
- To actively develop links with local and borough based LGBT groups and venues
- To facilitate the setting up of LGBT forums
- To provide advise and information to internal agencies (e.g BLO, CSU etc) and external agencies (Victim Support, Galop, Broken Rainbow etc)
- To act as a resource for investigating officers with regard to liaison with victims, witnesses and referrals to appropriate agencies.
- To encourage and facilitate LGBT representation on borough IAGs
2. Promoting Awareness of LGBT issues
- To promote the role of the LGBT LO internally and externally
- To develop an understanding of basic LBGT issues with colleagues
- To raise the profile of LGBT issues across the borough
- Ensuring that LGBT issues are considered as part of the local Crime and Disorder Strategy
3. Ensuring accessibility of local LGBT information
- To supplement the community contact list with LGBT contacts
- To update the list and ensure its accessibility to appropriate personnel
4. Action on Homophobic & Transphobic Crime Statistics
- To have an ongoing awareness of Homophobic & Transphobic crime within the borough
- To share statistics with relevant partnership agencies and disseminate them as necessary within the borough
5. To increase the trust and confidence of the LGBT communities
- To develop initiatives to encourage the reporting of homophobic/Transphobic crimes affecting the LGBT communities
- To assist and advise units in proactive operations that involve or impact the LGBT communities in the borough
6. Continuity
- To ensure continuity of the work when the LGBT Liaison Officer is reassigned.
