Community-Police Consultative Group

The Community-Police Consultative Group for Lambeth (the Group) was set up following recommendations in Lord Scarman's report into the Brixton disorders in April 1981, and is the forerunner of similar groups established in other London boroughs and across the country.

First and foremost, the Group is a statutory forum at which members of the Group and the public can discuss the policing of Lambeth. This gives the police the opportunity to report directly to the community it serves about local policing issues and provides the community with the chance to express its concerns on matters relating to the policing in the Borough and local priorities.

The meetings are not intended to be confrontational but are meant to help the community and the police to have better understanding of each other with the ultimate aim being to enhance community safety and reduce crime. In other words, the Group can be both supportive and robustly critical of the police as circumstances demand.

Apart from receiving reports about police operations and crime in Lambeth, the Group also discusses a variety of subjects such as firearms, drugs, deaths in custody, domestic violence, racial harassment, policing diversity, street crime, stop and search etc. More often than not, Group meetings result in some form of action that the Group agrees to undertake on behalf of the community.

While many of the people who attend Group meetings are members of the public, the Group has a membership consisting a variety of community groups (such as Faith groups and local societies) and individuals, as well as different agencies and organisations from within the criminal justice system (e.g. the Metropolitan Police Service, London Probation Service, Victim Support, HM Prison Brixton).

The police at meetings are represented by the Borough Commander, currently Chief Superintendent Richard Quinn.

The current Chairperson of the Group is Lee Jasper, who was elected at the Group's Annual General Meeting on 22 July 2003, along with Paul Andell (Vice-Chairperson), Wesley Walters-Stephenson (Hon. Comptroller) and Rev. Ivelaw Bowman (Chairperson, Racial Harassment Committee).

Group meetings are held at 6.00 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month (except August) at Lambeth Town Hall. Agendas and minutes are sent out seven days prior to the date of the next meeting or can be obtained from the Group's office (details below). Members of the public are most welcome to attend and raise any policing issues of concern.
