LEWISHAM POLICE
COMMUNITY CONSULTATIVE GROUP
(LPCCG)
The Group discusses aspects of policing which matter to the people of Lewisham. The police ask the Group for its views on policing strategy. For example, priorities set in the policing plan, which are drawn up each year are discussed. Members of the Group are able to consider proposals and issues with the organisations they represent and bring those views to the Group.
Guest speakers attend meetings to give presentations on topics of importance to local people, such as drugs, anti social behaviour or crime prevention, following which there is a question and answer session.
The Borough Commander reports on local initiatives such as Safer Neighbourhoods and crime statistics. The Group questions the police about plans for tackling crime; for example, burglary, street crimes and hate crimes. It also comments on police procedures such as stop and search/account.
The Group promotes discussions between the community and the police. The meeting provides opportunities for effective police/community consultation. The police recognise the need to listen to and understand the attitudes of the community to policing in Lewisham. The police also want to help the public understand the difficulties police officers face in dealing with local problems.
The Group constitution and terms of reference set out the range of topics that can be discussed. You can obtain a copy of the constitution and terms of reference from the co-ordinator to the Group.
You do not need to be a member of the Group to attend a meeting; any member of the public is welcome and the meetings are widely advertised in the libraries, press, and internet. About two weeks before each meeting the agenda is published and copies are sent to each member of the Group.
The dates for each meeting are programmed a year at a time. You can check them at the same place where you find an agenda.
There is often a report with each item setting out the action the Group is recommended to take and the details of the issues. The Chair will invite the author of a report or item to introduce it. The topic will then be open for discussion. Questions are usually invited so that people are clear about all the points.
You can ask a question or make a point about any item as it is discussed. All you have to do is put your hand up. The Chair will ask you to speak when it is your turn. You may also choose to observe and not speak up.
You can attend any of the public meetings held at the Civic Suite, without needing to pre-book. Agenda and previous minutes will be available at every meeting.
In addition, outreach meetings are held on specific subjects such as fear of crime or stop and search. The aim of the outreach meetings is to encourage consultation with people who would not usually come to the Civic Suite.
